A Steady Signal in a Noisy World

Today we're joining credit unions around the world to celebrate a simple but powerful idea: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World.

For more than a century, credit unions have worked to improve financial well-being, strengthen communities, and provide opportunities for people from all walks of life.

As a member-owned financial cooperative, Kitsap Credit Union is proud to be part of a global movement dedicated to helping people achieve their goals and build brighter futures.

What Is International Credit Union Day?

International Credit Union Day (ICU Day) is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October.

It's a day to recognize the positive impact credit unions make by:

  • Promoting financial inclusion
  • Supporting local communities
  • Providing financial education
  • Helping people achieve financial well-being
  • Empowering members through cooperative ownership

These are the foundations of the seven cooperative principles that all credit unions and cooperatives use as the foundations of their organizations. This is what makes credit unions different from other financial institutions.

7 Tracks. 1 Signal.

Credit unions around the world follow seven cooperative principles that guide everything we do:

1. Voluntary & Open Membership

Everyone belongs.

Membership is open to all who are eligible and willing to participate.

2. Democratic Member Control

Every voice matters.

Members help shape the future of their credit union through participation and voting.

3. Member Economic Participation

We grow stronger together.

Members contribute to and benefit from the success of their cooperative.

4. Autonomy & Independence

Knowledge builds confidence.

Independent cooperatives empower people to make informed decisions and pursue their goals.

5. Education, Training & Information

Learning opens doors.

Credit unions help members build knowledge and confidence through education.

6. Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Partnerships create impact.

Working together helps cooperatives create even greater benefits for members and communities.

7. Concern for Community

Strong communities help everyone thrive.

Credit unions invest in the long-term well-being of the people and places they serve.
