Your Credit Union Will Never Ask You to Install an App on Your Phone or Computer

Fraudsters are calling people and pretending to be from their financial institution — and they’re using a new trick to gain access to your accounts. They ask you to download a remote-access app such as AnyDesk, TeamViewer, or QuickSupport, claiming it’s needed to “secure” your account.

Don’t be fooled — these calls are not from us. Once you install the app, the scammer can take control of your device and your finances.

How the Scam Works

The caller may sound professional and even use our real phone number through caller ID spoofing. They’ll say things like:

“We’ve detected suspicious activity on your account — I can help fix it right now.”

“Please download an app so I can verify your account information.”

Once you grant access, the fraudster can:

  • View your screen and online banking activity
  • Capture one-time verification codes
  • Transfer funds or lock you out of your own account

Warning Signs to Watch For

Be cautious if someone:

  • Asks you to download an app or share your screen
  • Requests remote access to your phone or computer
  • Pressures you to act immediately to “prevent loss”
  • Asks for your password, PIN, or verification codes

Even if the call appears to come from the credit union’s number, it could be spoofed.

What to Do If You Get a Call Like This

1. Hang up immediately.

2. Do not download or open any app at the caller’s request.

3. Call us directly using the number on the back of your debit card or from our official website.

4. Report the incident so we can help secure your account.

If You Already Installed a Remote App

Take these steps right away:

1. Disconnect your device from the internet.

2. Uninstall the app immediately.

3. Change your passwords for Online Banking, email, and any financial apps.

4. Contact the credit union’s fraud department for help monitoring your accounts.

5. Run a full security scan or contact a trusted IT professional to ensure your device is safe.

Remember

Your credit union will never:

  • Ask you to install software or an app
  • Request remote access to your device
  • Ask for verification codes or passwords over the phone

When in doubt — hang up, look up, and call back using a trusted number.

Together, we can stop these scams before they cause harm.
