How KCUCares Supports Food Banks Across Mason, Jefferson & King Counties

Earlier this year, Kitsap Credit Union and the KCUCares Foundation came together for our annual Send Hunger Packing initiative, contributing $90,000 to support local food banks across Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, Jefferson, and King counties. This effort reflects our ongoing commitment to hunger relief—helping ensure families and neighbors have access to nutritious food while strengthening the organizations that serve them with care and dignity.

As we conclude our series highlighting these incredible partners, we’re turning our focus to the food banks serving Mason, Jefferson, and King counties. While each organization serves a unique community, they share a common mission: meeting immediate needs while fostering connection, dignity, and hope.

Nourishment That Reaches Far Beyond the Shelf

Support from the KCUCares Foundation helps food banks do more than stock shelves—it helps expand access, improve food quality, and ensure families can prepare healthy, meaningful meals at home. Nicolas Van Deren, Community Engagement Officer at Northwest Harvest, shared how this support ripples through communities across Washington:

“The funds donated to Northwest Harvest will be used for food procurement to our partner network of 330 other organizations and two free grocery stores in Seattle and Yakima. The stories from our partners show the real-life difference these efforts make. Sequim Food Bank in Clallam County shared: ‘We had a mom of two visit the food bank for the first time. She was surprised to find shelf-stable staples, milk, fresh protein, and even produce plus a recipe card. She told us, I used to think food banks only had canned stuff. I didn’t realize I could actually cook a full, healthy meal for my kids with what I got here.’”

Stories like this highlight the impact of access to nutritious food—and the empowerment that comes from being able to provide for your family with dignity and choice.
