2025 Press Releases

  • Bremerton, WA – October 25, 2025 - Kitsap Credit Union is proud to announce that it is the first credit union in Washington State to receive approval from the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) to make an equity investment under the newly expanded authority granted by law (RCW 31.12.436), which provides state-chartered credit unions with broader investment powers.

This groundbreaking move marks a new era in credit union innovation and engagement with emerging technologies. The investment provides a design partnership with D8TAOPS, Inc., an enterprise-ready AI and data orchestration company based in Beaverton, Oregon. The investment will directly support Kitsap Credit Union’s mission to modernize operations, increase efficiency, and enhance the member experience through intelligent systems and real-time data tools.

“This is a transformative moment is not just for our organization, but for the credit union movement as a whole,” said Shawn Gilfedder, President & CEO of Kitsap Credit Union. “Through this strategic investment and design partnership we’re helping shape it, all while ensuring our members benefit from smarter, faster, and more secure financial services.”

D8TAOPS has developed a proprietary platform that transforms legacy data workflows into governed, agentic AI systems designed for real-time enterprise use. Kitsap Credit Union has already seen early success from the platform through a pilot audit use case that significantly improved accuracy and reduced processing time. That pilot also enabled KCU, through D8TAOPS’ platform, to develop a private language model within a secure cloud environment, setting the stage for future systems development and member-facing service enhancements.

Kitsap Credit Union’s investment, which complies with the law's requirement of staying below 5% of net worth, is a measured and strategic move that reflects the organization's financial strength, innovation culture, and deep commitment to community impact.

“By becoming the first credit union to act on this opportunity, we’re signaling to our members and our community that we’re future-focused,” said Gilfedder. “This investment will ultimately help us deliver better tools, improve workflows, and stay at the forefront of the rapidly evolving financial landscape.”

"This partnership with Kitsap Credit Union demonstrates how agentic AI and governed data orchestration deliver secure, real-time value today. By uniting Kitsap Credit Union’s forward-thinking leadership with our platform, we’re proving that credit unions can innovate faster, govern data responsibly, and set the standard for the future of financial services,” said Troy Wyatt, Founder & CEO of D8TAOPS, Inc.

The Department of Financial Institutions formally approved the investment on September 15, 2025, making Kitsap Credit Union a pioneer in applying the updated state law in a meaningful way.

As Kitsap Credit Union continues to lead with purpose, innovation, and impact, this milestone further demonstrates its dedication to empowering members, strengthening community relationships, and embracing smart, responsible growth.

Since 2019, Kitsap Credit Union has donated over $500,000 to Foodbank and
    Backpack programs.

They continued the Kitsap Credit Union mission at their Send Hunger Packing event
by donating $66,000 to local Backpack Feeding Programs. With $4 being the
average meal cost for grades K-5 in Washington State, their donation for this event
    alone will provide 16,500 meals.

Amidst inflation and supply chain shortages, too many households with children
struggle to afford food. The Backpack for Kids programs have a direct positive impact
    on these families in need.

“As an organization, we are committed to continue to do what we can to support
their efforts,” said Gilfedder. “Together, we can help our neighbors combat hunger.”

2022 Press Releases

  • (Bremerton, Washington – March 21, 2022) – The heartfelt appeal delivered by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the United States Congress inspired many from around the world to show their support to the country being stricken with war. Kitsap Credit Union has already donated $10,000 in support of Ukrainian refugees and has created a campaign in hopes of encouraging others in their community to contribute towards helping the people of the besieged country.

The devastating crisis in Ukraine has already displaced over 3.5 million men, women, and children who have fled their country in search of safety due to the unprecedented attacks from Russia.
“Our hearts and thoughts go out to our Ukrainian neighbors, and although separated by distance, we stand beside them at the most devastating moment of their lives,” said Shawn Gilfedder CEO Kitsap Credit Union.

Since the very first day they opened their doors, Kitsap Credit Union’s mission has been to help better the lives of those in need. Now they are taking this dedication beyond their borders. In a show of support, Kitsap Credit Union has donated to the United Nations Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF).  They chose this organization because of the benevolent work the UHF does via tax-deductible donations to support refugee families.

The UHF coordinates with the United Nations, partners in Ukraine, neighboring countries, and the authorities to help and protect refugees and people displaced by violence, conflict, and persecution. The financial support will help provide life-saving essentials including shelter, water, food, safety, and protection for those in need.

Kitsap Credit Union is inviting others to join them in donating to this important cause. The credit union has kicked off a campaign through their local branches, website, and social media platforms. With animated messages, informational posts, as well as appeal videos from Kitsap Credit Union team members, the organization is encouraging their members and community to show their support for Ukrainian families in need.

To learn more about the UHF, or to make a tax-deductible donation, please use this link: https://crisisrelief.un.org/ukraine-crisis.

In addition to the UHF, additional organizations that people can consider donating to are International Rescue Committee, CARE USA, Mercy Corps, and Save the Children.

To learn more about Kitsap Credit Union’s efforts in this cause or to schedule an interview with Kitsap Credit Union CEO Shawn Gilfedder, please contact Melisa Tropeano at melisa@mtlcommunications.com or 201.572.1808.
  • (Bremerton, Washington – March 11, 2022) – Kitsap Credit Union is proud to share they have been awarded three prestigious 2022 Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Diamond Awards. The esteemed annual credit union industry recognition, the CUNA Diamond Awards rewards excellence, and outstanding results in credit union marketing. Kitsap Credit Union was bestowed the awards for Annual Report, Brand Awareness, and Financial Education.

“It is such an honor for our organization to be recognized with not 1 but 3 Diamond Awards, one of the highest national distinctions for credit unions,” said Shawn Gilfedder, CEO Kitsap Credit Union. “If we have proven anything over the last few years, it’s that our committed team at Kitsap Credit Union can come together and achieve great things.”

Despite yet another year of challenges and pivots brought about by the global pandemic, the staff at Kitsap Credit Union continued to work together and accomplished major achievements in marketing that assisted in delivering growth to their members and tools to better the lives of their community.

“These particular awards mean so much to us because they represent our commitment to excellence and bringing value to our members and the community,” said Gilfedder.
Each year the Annual Report is one of the most vital communications the credit union provides its members. As a member owned financial cooperative, the members of the Kitsap Credit Union are an essential part of their team. Therefore, the credit union knows how important it is for members to feel connected to what has been accomplished as well as the direction the organization is moving toward. Last year, Kitsap Credit Union matched their new Annual Meeting by revamping their annual report from a print version to digital. In a time with so much change, it was crucial that the familiar voice of Kitsap Credit Union translated through the new format. The credit union was able to deliver a message where their members felt they were being directly addressed in a welcoming manner; the same one they have been accustomed to when it comes to Kitsap Credit Union.

Unfortunately, alienation is one of the biggest problems people face today in every part of the world, including the areas which Kitsap Credit Union serves. Understanding this issue, when it came to building brand awareness, Kitsap Credit Union communicated the greatest asset it had to offer – a place to belong. While most institutions compete in a product arena, the credit union chose to connect with potential members through trust, care, and relationship – which is at the center of what it means to belong. The “You Belong Here” branding campaign shared the credit union’s story that no matter where you are in your journey, you can belong here and that you are not just a customer. You belong to a credit union, Kitsap Credit Union. Reassurance that you are a part of something bigger and not alone is a comfort people are always in need of.
For over 88 years Kitsap Credit Union’s mission has been to improve the lives of its members and for those community members in need. To address the growing financial needs of the youth, young adults, and adults within their community, Kitsap Credit Union developed a KCU Financial Wellness Program which implements three leading financial education curriculums: It’s A Money Thing for young adults, a High School Program, and the Achieve Adult Program.

The goal of the Kitsap Credit Union financial education programs is to reach as many students and adults as possible with practical financial skills and comprehension to help them confidently navigate their financial lives.

With small businesses being at the core of Kitsap Credit Union’s local economy, the financial education program introduced small business modules to their Financial Wellness Adult Program to better serve these members of the community and provide them tools to financially thrive.
“I am grateful for our Kitsap Credit Union team and the great work they accomplish together for our members and the community,” said Gilfedder. “And I am very proud of the loyalty and dedication they have for each other during the process.”

“On behalf of the entire organization, I thank CUNA for acknowledging and celebrating our team’s accomplishments,” said Gilfedder.

    Tropeano at melisa@mtlcommunications.com or 201.572.1808.

  • (Bremerton, Washington – January 20, 2022) – Kitsap Credit Union is proud to announce it has received the designation as Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). For over 88 years Kitsap Credit Union’s mission has been to improve the lives of its members. Titled as a CDFI, Kitsap Credit union will have access to federal funding to further provide financial services to those community members in economic need.

We are very excited about the value the CDFI designation will bring to our communities,” said Kitsap Credit Union CEO Shawn Gilfedder. “As a CDFI credit union we will be able to expand the population we serve and magnify what we will be able to offer them, bringing them closer to fulfilling their dreams.”

The U.S. Department of the Treasury awards the CDFI designation to institutions that go out of their way to be inclusive of all citizens, including those that have economic difficulties.
“It is important that our members know their money is with an organization that focuses on improving all lives in our community,” said Gilfedder.

Kitsap Credit Union looks forward to working with those in need by helping them gain financial
stability. Through their CDFI designation, Kitsap Credit Union will now be able to offer low-cost
mortgages for first-time home buyers, loans for small businesses, and strategic loans designed
to help members build their credit.

Now that they have officially been awarded this honor, Kitsap Credit Union has begun
developing plans on how they will be allocating their CDFI grants which will focus on
serving the underserved populations in their communities including Native Americans, the
    elderly, and low-income households.

“Our goals through our CDFI efforts are to help financially educate our community and in turn promote a healthier local economy,” said Gilfedder.

  • Credit Union is honored for helping thousands of Washingtonians through hunger relief and PPP small business loans.

BREMERTON, Wash., September 28, 2021 – Kitsap Credit Union the not-for-profit financial cooperative serving over 120,000 residents and businesses in the State of Washington, has been awarded the 2021 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award and the 2021 Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award from the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).

Each award honors one credit union every year whose efforts strengthen their community.  The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award is given to one credit union that has shown its social responsibility through projects carried out within the community. Additionally, the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Awards is granted to a company that has demonstrated its commitment to the “People-Helping-People” philosophy.

For their team’s efforts in feeding their community amid the food crisis heightened by the global pandemic, Kitsap Credit Union is the proud winner of the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award.

Kitsap Credit Union’s extraordinary member service in providing local businesses essential aid through their PPP loan program, has awarded them the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Service Award.

“At a time where hunger was growing exponentially, our team gathered food and fed our neighbors. When our small businesses were desperate for help, our organization became a certified SBA lender and developed our PPP program all in a matter of 3 weeks,” said Kitsap Credit Union CEO Shawn Gilfedder.

“The quality of work and rapid speed in which these programs were executed is the quintessential example of the Kitsap Credit Union team’s dedication to our community. We are honored to be recognized with these two awards by the Credit Union National Association,” added Mr. Gilfedder.

Kitsap Credit Union will be officially presented its two awards at the CUNA 2021 Summit Awards Program on October 7.

  • The partnership is intended to assist and educated local communities on financial wellness as well as new reading material

BREMERTON, Wash., September 17, 2021 – Kitsap Credit Union a not-for-profit company, announced its most recent partnership with national renowned Scholastic Corporation to help deliver education on money management and books to four local school districts this October.

With schools re-opening their doors, Kitsap Credit Union will be kicking off the year by partnering with local schools in Kitsap, Jefferson, Mason and Pierce counties throughout the first two weeks of October. Through this partnership, Kitsap Credit Union will provide new books for students in grades three through six. In addition, this has provided Kitsap Credit Union the opportunity to support the conversation surrounding Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI).

“We are thrilled to have been asked to partner with the National Scholastic Corporation,” said Shawn Gilfedder, CEO and President Kitsap Credit Union. “As we all witnessed over the last year, lives can be turned upside-down in a day.  People’s financial plans were shaken with layoffs and unemployment, businesses shut their doors, and there were financial challenges for many.  And children felt their family’s stress of those financial hardships too.  That’s why this is a great time to focus on financial education and raise awareness about the importance of understanding money management – especially when you are young.”

Each student will receive a book bag with two books, one regarding different financial topics and the other featuring different DEI issues for every student. Through these book fairs, Kitsap Credit Union will be able to reach almost 800 students and will provide an additional $3,800 in “Scholastic Book Dollars” for teachers to purchase additional resources for their classrooms.

Schools included in this partnership are as follows: Chimacum Elementary School, Armin Jahr Elementary School, Belfair Elementary School and Karshner Elementary School. The first event will be hosted at Armin Jahr Elementary School in Kitsap County on Thursday, October 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

  • (Bremerton, Washington – December 20, 2021) - Magnifying its mission of giving back to the communities they serve; Kitsap Credit Union has announced the launch of The KCUCares Foundation. With the credit union’s long history working with the community and local charities, they understand the larger demands necessary to truly help their neighbors. By unifying like-minded individuals and groups, The KCUCares Foundation will have the ability to lead initiatives with the resources to make powerful change long term.
Kitsap Credit Union’s corporate giving program has been working with organizations in their community for over 40 years. The relationships they have fostered not only allowed them to give-back, but the trust forged with the nonprofits’ frontline workers put them in the position to have their pulse on what the true needs are for different people in the community as they are happening and as they change and evolve.
“Giving on our own as an organization is important, but as we have seen, more must be done,” said Kitsap Credit Union CEO Shawn Gilfedder.
The development of The KCUCares Foundation positions the organization to unify corporation and individual donations and spearhead larger projects that will magnify what can be done for their community.

“The creation of The KCUCares Foundation will allow us to turn ordinary opportunities to extraordinary ones,” said Gilfedder.

The KCUCares Foundation will support their communities with a more intentional approach, focused on the three major pillars: Hunger, Homelessness, and Financial Wellness.
“Through collaborating with The KCUCares Foundation, individuals and businesses will belong to an organization who unites and leads them collectively to do good,” said Leah Olson, VP, Marketing and Director, The KCUCares Foundation. “Our goals are to provide more affordable housing, ensure those who are hungry can receive the help they need, and improve the financial wellbeing of those who live and work in our communities.”
The KCUCares Foundation made its first contribution at the KCU Holiday Treats & Eats Event on December 13, 2021, where the Foundation distributed $150,000 to 25 local food banks and backpacks for kids feeding programs.

2020 Press Releases

  • On December 7, 2020 Kitsap Credit Union presented check donations totaling $130,000 to 25 local Food Banks and Backpack for Kids organizations from Jefferson, Kitsap, Mason, and Pierce Counties of Washington State at its Holiday Cash and Dash event it hosted at their Harborside Corporate Office.

24 local organizations each received a $5000 donation from the credit union. Washington State’s leading hunger relief agency, Northwest Harvest was donated $10,000.

During these uncertain times, limited economic means continue to increase the number and frequency of individuals and families relying on local food banks and food assistance programs for basic nutritional needs.

“With some food banks serving more people than ever, we at Kitsap Credit Union found it crucial to support our local food banks in a much larger way during this challenging time,” said Kitsap Credit Union CEO Shawn Gilfedder.

Additionally, there have been a growing number of students registering for free and reduced lunch programs in all counties. To help ease the financial burden for these families, Kitsap Credit Union offered a Skip-A-Pay promotion to qualified members to raise funds for local Backpack-For-Kids feeding programs.

“It is essential we help families struggling with food insecurity,” said Gilfedder. “We knew this would be the area where we could make the most significant impact for our community.”

In 2019, Kitsap Credit Union donated $52,000 to local organizations. This year’s amount was significantly higher at $130,000, and it wasn’t revealed until the day of the event, thereby surprising each of the recipients.

Recipients were greeted with a musical entrance as they pulled into the drive thru event, where each organization was presented with a larger-than-life-size check along with a real check. Following a quick photo, and Kitsap Credit Union’s gratitude for each organization’s tireless work throughout the year, each recipient dashed off with the cash.
